How to Clean a Dishwasher

Many homeowners are unsure of the best cleaning techniques for their dishwashers.

Dishwashers are time-saving and practical but require proper maintenance and cleaning. If homeowners notice the dishes aren’t coming out as clean as usual or there’s an unpleasant smell, it may be time to clean the dishwasher.

Cleaning the filter

An important and usually overlooked step of cleaning dishwashers is cleaning the filter. This filter collects bits of food from the dishes and prevents them from clogging the drain. Thanks to the filter, the dishwasher can work on cleaning the dishes efficiently without obstructions. But the filter can get clogged, especially if the dishes aren’t rinsed thoroughly before being placed in the dishwasher. That’s why it’s vital to clean them once in a while.

There are two types of filters. The first type is older filters that are self-cleaning, and the second, newer type, requires manual cleaning.

If homeowners aren’t sure which filter type they have, they should pay attention to the noise the dishwasher makes. The self-cleaning process is usually very loud, so if homeowners haven’t noticed this unusual noise, they probably have a newer model.

The filter is found on the dishwasher’s tub floor, around the base of the bottom spray arm, or in the back corners. Most filters twist off and are easy to remove.

To clean the filter, homeowners should mix warm water and detergent and soak it. Then, use a soft brush or a toothbrush to remove stubborn particles. Afterward, the filter should be rinsed with warm water, dried, and put back in place.

Cleaning the inside

Cleaning the inside of a dishwasher is quick and straightforward. The first step is removing the filter, dishwasher racks, and utensil holders. This gives access to all the cracks and hard-to-access spots. Next, place the items in a combination of warm water and a cup of vinegar and let them soak for about 30 minutes.

Next, remove the food debris. Inspect all the holes, cracks, and corners to get everything out. Many homeowners use toothpicks or brushes for this step.

Now, place a dishwasher-safe bowl containing one cup of vinegar onto the dishwasher’s bottom and run it on a hot water cycle. The vinegar will remove any of the potentially remaining particles and debris. The last step is to sprinkle one cup of baking soda on the dishwasher’s bottom and run it on a short cycle to freshen up the dishwasher and remove stains.
