Common Reasons Stove Burners Won't Turn On

There are several advantages to using a gas stove burner over an electric one. These benefits include fuel efficiency, responsive temperature control, and faster cooking times. In addition, when cooking on a gas cooker, there is something inherently satisfying about the clicking sound of the ignition and the brightly burning flames. However, at times a burner flame fails to appear even after several attempts.

There could be a variety of reasons for this issue. Keep reading to learn some common reasons why a stove burner won't turn on.

The cooker has no power

This might sound too obvious, but it's a surprisingly common cause. Depending on where the cooker plug is situated, it may have been knocked out of the socket by mistake. Unfortunately, many fail to check whether the cooker is plugged in, assuming it must be.

Burner caps positioned incorrectly

Another cause is when the burner cap is in the wrong position. With some stoves, it's possible to reposition the burner caps so that valves and grooves are not aligned. The gas will not get into the burner when this happens, making the valve technically closed. The burner caps should be checked and rotated to fit correctly on the burner.

Problem with igniter connections

When a gas burner fails to light following a thorough clean, it could be that the igniter connections have become loose. The wiring needs to be secure and properly attached to the igniter. A loose connection will prevent the igniter from sparking and starting the fire.

Igniter needs replacing

It could also be that the igniter requires replacing. You can confirm this by shutting the light off, turning the cooker knob, then looking at the color of the sparks released from the igniter. The color should be a cool blue-white. If this isn't the case, the igniter likely needs replacing.

Electrodes knocked out of place

It could be that the electrodes have been shaken loose. The gas is ignited with an electrical spark from a line of electrodes released from the burner. These electrodes are like a line of white dots inside the burner, beneath the burner caps. Look closely for the line of electrodes that may display signs that they are out of place. The burner should light once the electrodes are lined up if this is the problem.

Light the gas fire

Gas stoves are often the preferred choice, especially by chefs. Although they are typically more reliable than an electric cooker, the burners fail to light at times. There are many potential causes for this issue, such as something getting loose or needing replacing.
