Ice Maker Repair Tips

If ice tastes funny, cleaning is the first step.

Most homeowners overlook their ice makers for years, as long as ice keeps coming out. However, when issues like too much ice, not enough ice, or funny tasting ice arise, it may be time to give this appliance some attention. The following are some common ice maker problems, along with quick solutions to help.

Funny taste

If ice tastes funny, cleaning is the first step. Remove and clean the ice bin, and use a wet cloth with mild soap on the interior of the freezer. Finally, check the water filter; it should be changed regularly according to manufacturer instructions.

Too much ice

An overflow of ice is usually caused by a problem with the stop arm of the ice bin. It may have become dislodged, or something in the freezer may be blocking its movement. Ensure that the ice bin is placed correctly, so that the ice trips the stop arm as the tray fills.

No Ice

If no ice is being produced, check to see if the stop arm is stuck in the stop position. If not, the problem is in either the water supply line or the motor. Check around the ice maker and behind the freezer for a water switch or valve that may have accidentally been knocked into the closed position. Contact a professional for repair if neither of these are the cause.

Water leaks

Water leaks are usually caused by temperature problems that cause either melting ice or condensation buildups. Use a food safety thermostat to check the freezer’s temperature. Check refrigerant levels if the freezer is unable to maintain optimal temperature without being turned to maximum.

If none of the aforementioned tips solve the issue, contact a professional appliance repair company to help.
