How To Prevent Washing Machine Problems

Most washing machine leaks are caused by one of three issues: supply hose failures, machine overflows, and drain line failures.

Washing machines are one of the most common culprits of residential plumbing problems. And when problems occur, they can be severe. Washing machine-related insurance claims average over $5,000 per incident.

Thankfully, only a handful of issues are responsible for almost all of the washing machine plumbing problems. Here’s what expert plumbing professionals want their customers to know about keeping their risk-level low.

Common causes of washing machine problems

Most washing machine leaks are caused by one of three issues: supply hose failures, machine overflows, and drain line failures.

Supply hoses most often fail because they’re worn and old. It can take less than ten years for a supply hose to degrade enough to cause problems.

Machine overflows occur when there is a problem with the washing machine itself. They overflow because they’re misused—overfilled or filled with the wrong soap—or are in need of repair.

Drain lines fail because they’re broken, bent, or detached from the wall. Their issues often overlap with those of supply hoses.

Preventing washing machine plumbing issues

How can a homeowner reduce their risks of washing machine leaks? There are several things they can do. The most helpful step is to inspect the machine’s hoses regularly. Contrary to popular belief, metal hoses do not make a machine immune to water issues; any style of hose eventually needs to be replaced.

In addition to checking for slices or cuts in the hoses, ensure the hose connections are secure. Always keep at least 4” of space between the back of the machine and the wall to reduce the risk of the hose becoming dislodged. Manually check the tightness of the hose connections and use a wrench to secure them if necessary.

Having a professional plumber inspect washing machine connections every couple of years is a good idea. In addition to replacing the hoses and drain lines, homeowners may need to replace the washers, valves, or other plumbing components. Again, an experienced plumber can spot issues before they arise.

In addition to checking supply line connections, a plumber can check the laundry sink and drainage. Blocked drains can lead to significant issues, and many drains come with a filter that needs to be cleaned or replaced.

Washing machine issues won’t wait. A washing machine can dislodge up to 650 gallons of water per hour into a home. Should this occur, the homeowner will need help quickly. When in doubt, it’s best to call a reliable plumber for expert plumbing services.
