Considerations for a New Refrigerator

Memorial Day weekend is here, and we can’t help but mention that it’s one of the most exceptional times of the year to buy a new refrigerator. Whether you’re moving to a new home, remodeling your kitchen, or the old refrigerator has seen it’s best days, here are some things you should keep in mind when you buy a new refrigerator.

Keep space in mind

Not only do you want to keep the amount of space available in mind, but also allow for airflow and easy opening of the door. If you have an island or a step-saver kitchen, consider that during the purchase.

The shape of refrigerators has changed, and while the walls have become thinner as a result of more efficient insulation efficiency, they have also gotten deeper and taller.

Measure the space you have available, then plan for at least an inch clearance for the top and sides and two inches for the back. If you’re planning for an ice maker, that will automatically create the space.

Size

Perhaps your family is growing, and you’ve determined you need a bigger unit. How much space is enough? About four to six cubic feet of refrigerator space per person is plenty.

Be sure the path is clear

There needs to be a door of adequate size to facilitate delivery. This was a dilemma for one homeowner who discovered that, while her front door was big enough in her two-bedroom condo, newel post for the stairs was too close to the wall for the home to be able to have a regular-depth refrigerator. Make sure the path to the spot is clear and the door dimensions adequate.

Styles

The best value is always the old top-freezer style. Other options are a bottom-freezer, side-by-side, French door (a combination of a side-by-side and bottom freezer), and the new counter-depth style, meaning it’s created to align evenly with your counter.

Features

From quick-chill to Sabbath-compliant, there are a substantial variety of features each model offers. From Smart features to Energy Star, the essential factor which determines which features to choose are the needs and habits of the family.

For example, some models don’t offer the option of storing a gallon of milk without omitting a shelf entirely. Others have sliding or folding shelves to allow for the addition of tall items. Freezer space can be confounded by the design of the ice maker, mainly if it delivers through the door. Some have ice makers included, and others don’t.

Family hub

A family hub is the addition of a Smart screen onto the refrigerator door so that the family can get connected. From shopping lists to calendar updates and notes, everyone in the family can benefit from this refrigerator nanny. While the internal camera can keep the family grocery shopping in line, the outside tells the family when food is about to expire. The icemaker can be controlled from a Smartphone, too.
