The Importance of Cleaning Condenser Coils on a Refrigerator

A refrigerator is an essential appliance in every household, and an efficiently functioning unit helps make life convenient. Like all other appliances, carrying out routine cleaning and maintenance ensures that the refrigerator operates well. The condenser coil is a crucial component of a refrigerator, and the only one that requires regular care to ensure that it runs better and lasts long.

The most common issue homeowners face with their fridge is lack of cooling at the desired temperature and complete breakdown due to dirty or clogged condenser coils. This article will explain why it is critical to keep the refrigerator's condenser coils clean.

What are the effects of dirty condenser coils?

The prime job of a condenser is to cool the refrigerant and expel the heat out of the refrigerator continuously until the air inside the fridge and freezer is at the required temperature. When the coils are blocked due to dirt, the process of expelling heat is affected, and the coolant cannot do its job.

It also puts extra pressure on the compressor and other electrical parts; when the coils aren't functioning correctly, the compressor uses additional energy and requires more time to generate the desired cooling effect. This issue increases the utility bill, cuts the appliance's life, and raises the refrigerator's possibility of breaking down.

Usually, it is recommended to clean the condenser coils annually, but the frequency may vary if the home has long-haired pets.

How to clean condenser coils

The first step to clean the refrigerator condenser coils is to find where they are located; they can usually be found at the back or bottom of the fridge. If unsure of its position, look in the owner's manual.

It is risky to work with an electrical device while it is plugged in. Unplug the refrigerator and keep the doors closed.

For coils located at the back, remove the access panel and place it on a piece of cardboard on the floor to protect it. For a fan-cooled condenser located underneath the fridge, remove the front protective grilles.

Clean the coils, remove all the dust accumulated on the fan blades with a vacuum cleaner's crevice tool attachment or a coil brush, and pick any debris that might have found its way to the floor.

Put the coverings back after the coils have been cleaned thoroughly. The coils located at the back usually don't attract pet hairs and dirt but still should be cleaned periodically. Re-plug it in to see a considerable improvement in the functioning of the refrigerator.

Regularly cleaning the refrigerator condenser coils to save money, increase its lifespan, and ensure it functions optimally. Homeowners can also contact the local appliance repair company to clean the coils and any other service requirements.
