What to Do If Your Washing Machine Is Leaking
It is not uncommon for washing machines to develop leaks. However, it upsets homeowners to see water all over the floor when they enter the laundry room. A washing machine can leak for several reasons, common for both top and front load machines. Washers consist of a complex system of hoses and valves to supply or drain water while cleaning the clothes. Any issue with these can result in a leak.
A leaking washing machine is sometimes easy to fix without any professional assistance. So, before getting an appliance repair company technician on call, try these DIY fixes to restore normal functioning.
The first thing to do if the washing machine is leaking is to locate the leak source to determine the best method to fix the problem.
Check that the machine is installed on a stable surface
Unplug the washing machine and ensure it is on a level surface. A washing machine installed on uneven ground or an unbalanced surface is most likely to leak water.
Before checking the hoses, gaskets, or pump for damage or repair needs, first look into these easy and quick to fix issues:
Ensure that the machine is loaded according to the manufacturer’s recommendation. Overloading a washer can cause leaking issues.
If a new and recently installed washing machine is leaking, check to see that the drain plug is removed. When the drain hose is attached and the washing machine runs without taking out the drain plug, it gets tough for the washer to drain effectively. Turn off the water supply to remove the plug and reattach the drain pipe.
Leaks also happen if the drain hose is not tightly secured.
Check to ensure that the drain is free of clogs. A blocked drain affects smooth water flow through the drainpipe, which causes water to leak. Pour hot water down the drain and clear it of clogs using a straight wire hanger.
Check water supply hoses for damage and tighten loose connections, if any.
Using too much soap, especially with a water softening system, can clog the overflow tubes, leading to leaks. Avoid excess bubbles by using the low-sudsing detergent in the right amount.
Check the detergent drawer. The machine may leak if it is not closed correctly.
Run a regular washing machine cycle to determine whether the water is dripping from the front, back, or under the washer. It can help in locating the source and deciding the course of action to fix the issue.
After eliminating the above causes, call an appliance repair and service company to inspect and detect the leak source and carry out the required repairs and replacement. Issues like damaged, worn-out, brittle, and faulty supply or internal hoses, blocked pump or worn-out inner pump seal, loose or damaged gasket or door boot seal require disassembling the machine to repair or replace parts. These tasks are best left to professionals equipped with specialized tools and have the experience to get the washing machine up again.
