Why Does the Garbage Disposal Just Hum?

Most homes built today have a garbage disposal installed in the kitchen sink. The machine adds value to the house and often operates for over 10 years without a major malfunction. However, the unit will eventually experience some sort of breakdown over time. One of the most common problems homeowners with garbage disposals face is that mysterious humming sound. But is this a serious condition?

Why does my garbage disposal hum?

Hearing the humming sound from the garbage disposal indicates the unit is still receiving electricity. As a result, power supply issues can be eliminated from the list of problems, but this might mean a clog or jam is preventing the unit from grinding.

Typically, bits of food can get stuck between the hole and the impeller plate, jamming the machine. Here’s how to solve the problem:

  • Unplug the garbage disposal and cut the electric circuit to prevent electrocution and avoid a burnt motor.

  • Find the breaker socket in the lower part of the disposal unit and turn it with a hex-head Allen wrench.

  • Keep turning the tool so that the flywheel turns and the stuck particle is dislodged.

  • If the unit doesn’t come with a hex socket or you don’t have access to an Allen key, stick a broom down the drain so that it reaches the impeller plates. Press it against a plate and begin to rotate the broom.

  • Remove the broom, restore power to the unit, and turn it on to see if it’s functioning normally and the humming sounds have stopped.

  • If the process fails and the sound persists, the problem may be caused by another issue. If so, reach out to reliable appliance maintenance professionals to get a detailed inspection.

In addition to a jammed object, another common reason why the garbage disposal is humming is a tripped disposer or ground-fault circuit interrupter (GFCI). Consequently, the electrical power can’t turn the motor, leading to humming sounds.

If this is the case, the easiest solution is to reset the garbage disposal and verify that normal operation has been restored. The unit can be reset by pressing the button in the lower part of the machine.

If the issue isn’t a clog, a tripped disposer, or GFCI, then the motor might need repair or replacement. In that case, make sure to consult a professional and receive a quote to make the best decision for the house.

Responsible use of the garbage disposal is key to preventing jams. To that end, avoid putting the following items down the unit:

  • Fibrous/stringy waste (celery, banana peels, asparagus, poultry skins, etc.)

  • Ground pasta, rice, bread, and other starchy foods that can expand in the drain

  • Oil, fat, and grease

  • Coffee grinds

  • Bones, seeds, and fruit pits

The pros are a phone call away

Even when the apparent problem has been addressed, the garbage disposal may continue to hum. If that happens, it’s time to bring in appliance maintenance specialists. They’ll get to the bottom of the issue and resolve it expertly.
